Well water testing Oklahoma: the DEQ state lab tests, fees, and how to take a sample

Well water testing Oklahoma is a laboratory job. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality State Environmental Laboratory runs private-well tests. A driller or pump installer is not the lab. This page lists the FY27 state lab fees, how to get a kit, and how to take a bacteria sample.

Who runs the test

The state lab tests the water.

The State Environmental Laboratory says its staff and services support “private citizen well water analysis.” That is the lab. It is not a drilling company and it is not a pump installer.

A new well follows different rules. Read the water well drilling rules in Oklahoma. The OWRB-licensed companies on this directory are drillers and pump installers. This page does not list them as water-testing labs, and it does not say any of them test well water.

State Environmental Laboratory

What the state lab tests, and the FY27 fees

These are DEQ state lab fees from the FY27 fee schedule (SELSD-SD-008-R4), not prices from a drilling or pump company. The laboratory services fees page says: “List of available tests and fees effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.” The schedule says: “Base fee includes the FY27 Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 1.027.”

DEQ State Environmental Laboratory fees. Effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
Test What the schedule includes Base fee
Private Well Annual Test List Total coliforms and E. coli presence/absence, nitrate/nitrite, pH, conductivity $75.00
Private Well Diagnostics Test List The annual list, plus calcium, copper, iron, manganese, sodium, and hardness $175.00
Coliform, total and E. coli, presence/absence Single test. Liquid. Method SM 9223B $33.00
Nitrate/nitrite Single test. Liquid. Method EPA 353.2 $38.00
Arsenic Single test. Liquid. Methods EPA 200.7 and EPA 200.8 are both listed at this fee $33.00
Fluoride Single test. Liquid. Method EPA 300.1 $98.00

A credit or debit card adds a merchant fee of 2.25% of the amount due, plus a $2.00 portal fee on each card transaction. The fees page dates that card charge to July 1, 2022. DEQ also accepts checks, money orders, and cash. The same page says the State Environmental Laboratory does not have a cashier. A person paying with cash takes an estimated charges report to the second-floor cashier, then returns the receipt to the laboratory sample receipt area. Questions about those transaction fees go to [email protected] or 405-702-1130.

Paperwork and bottles

How to get a kit

Call 405-702-1000 or email [email protected]. The sample collection page says the lab can help with paperwork and sampling containers, and that “It is always best to call the laboratory.”

You can also use DEQ’s online Request Water Test form. The form fields load in the page. This guide does not list them. On October 21, 2026, the older address deq.ok.gov/water-test-request/ redirected to the DEQ homepage, so use the Request Water Test page linked here.

Private well bacteria sample

How to take a bacteria sample (DEQ steps)

These steps are from DEQ’s “Sampling Guide for the Collection of SM 9223B Total Coliforms and E. Coli,” the private-well instructions (8999-GUI30-R02-102324). The guide says the drinking water standard in these words: “Drinking Water Standard for Total Coliform is set at zero (<1.0) or absent.” This page quotes that line. It is not medical advice, and it does not promise a drinking-water result.

  1. Samples must be returned within 28 hours of collection. Do not ship on a Friday or weekend.
  2. The kit is a chain of custody form and one 100 mL plastic bottle with preservative (a white pill or white powder). A barcode label is included when the lab provides one.
  3. Remove the aerator. Use only a two-handled faucet, and only the cold side. Do not use a single-handle faucet, an outside tap, or a frost-free hydrant.
  4. Clean the cold faucet threads, inside and out, with at least a 10% bleach solution.
  5. Run the cold water for 5 minutes. Then reduce the flow to a slow, steady stream.
  6. Do not touch the inside of the lid or the bottle. Do not remove the white pill or powder.
  7. Fill the bottle slightly above the 100 mL line. Do not fill to the top of the neck. Replace the cap tightly, and do not over-tighten it.
  8. If a barcode is not provided, label the bottle, not the lid, with the date and time (a.m. or p.m.), the collector, and the sample location. Complete the chain of custody. Sign and date it before you mail the sample.
  9. The lab rejects the sample if the form is incomplete, illegible, or missing; the bottle is not labeled appropriately; the sample is under 100 mL; it is not received within 28 hours; it is not in the DEQ 100 mL bottle; it is frozen; or it is damaged beyond usability.

For personal delivery, sign the chain of custody at the receiving window of the DEQ Sample Management Unit, through the door on the northeast corner of the building.
